Managing University Graphic Systems (UGS)

Throughout my senior year at Cal Poly (Spring 2024—present), I have been working as the General Manager at University Graphic Systems, my major's on-campus design and print shop. This role is an incredibly rewarding experience, offering me real-world insights into the industry. From leading a team and managing day-to-day operations to collaborating with clients, I am gaining invaluable skills in leadership, communication, and problem-solving. It’s a hands-on experience that is helping me grow both personally and professionally in the design and print world.

The Team

One of my first responsibilities as General Manager was hiring a team of nine to fill key positions: 2 Marketing Managers, 3 Project Managers, 2 Specialty Managers, and 2 Account Managers. Together, we run every aspect of this student-led business, from working with clients to managing projects and promoting our services. One of my biggest priorities has been creating a positive and supportive environment where everyone can work well together and feel excited about what we’re accomplishing as a team.

My Responsibilities

Budget & Invoicing

I manage a $90,000 budget, consistently meeting and exceeding monthly financial benchmarks. I handle monthly inventory and invoicing processes in collaboration with Cal Poly Corporation to maintain seamless operations.

Oversee Projects

As General Manager, I oversee all print projects for a diverse range of clients, ensuring that each project runs smoothly from start to finish. I am responsible for delegating tasks effectively across the team to guarantee that deadlines are met and clients receive high-quality results, leading to consistent satisfaction and successful project outcomes.

UGS Apparel Line

I developed the UGS apparel line to launch new facets for business growth and increase brand visibility. Working closely with marketing and specialty managers, we turned creative ideas into tangible designs. Within just one month, we not only surpassed our break-even goals but also achieved a remarkable 500% profit, making the apparel line a key success for the business.

Scheduling

I create and manage weekly schedules, maximizing efficiency and productivity in project flow.
